Do I sign up for both portions of the test when I apply to test with Pearson Vue?

Updated over a year ago

Yes. There is a National and State specific portion to the licensing exam. The State portion is currently gone over in Unit 8, the Red Book, and at the end of your academic timeline after the course is completed a state review unlocks. Everything else is pretty much the national portion of the licensing exam.

Each section costs $55 to take. If you fail one section you only have to retake the section you failed BUT you have to meet these criteria or you will actually have to retake it all. For that fact, make sure you do these rules.

1st point is if you fail PSI you have one more attempt within 90 days or you will have to redo your application and resubmit it.

Think of that application you filled out (once approved) as a temporary ticket for TWO testing attempts. That means you get ONE more attempt if you fail it. (A total of two) This would mean new notary signatures etc on that application. Redo the entire application (except for our transcript which the WVREC keeps on file for 5 years) but the rest needs redone every two attempts.

So again the rules for this are… you get 2 attempts and the second attempt HAS to be within 90 days of your first attempt.

2nd is if you pass ONE portion but fail another portion (for example if you pass the state portion but fail the national portion you STILL are bound by this 90 day rule. You will have to take the part you failed within the 90 days OR you will have to resubmit the application and retake BOTH portions. That said, if you pass one portion and fail the other do NOT wait longer than 90 days to retest!

Lastly, once you DO pass both portions you don’t automatically GET the license. You HAVE

to send in page 13 of the PSI handbook which ACTIVATES the license. You NEED TO DO THIS or you can end up having to redo things so PLEASE ACTIVATE your license AFTER PASSING the test.

You are NOT in “inactive status” by simply NOT activating. You have to GET the license first
